Brief history: Hopkins' Office of the Chaplain grew out of the campus branch of the YMCA, separating formally and being absorbed by the university in 1969. For most of the 20th century, Rev. Chester Wickwire served as Hopkins' chaplain, promoting a program of political activism, community service and social consciousness that evolved into the current Campus Ministries and the separate Center for Social Concern.
